1. 3 Films by Alexander Sokurov: Oriental Elegy; Dolce; Humble Life

Description

Oriental Elegy is the first among the 'Japanese' videos by Alexander Sokurov, where real people are represented in their normal conditions and surroundings. They are simple people, but not ordinary. Their originality lies in the specificity of their souls, where poetry and mythology mean more than the symbols of contemporary reality.

A Humble Life: The whole work is an unhurried and detailed report from an old solitary house, lost in the mountains, in the village of Aska (Nara Prefecture), Japan, where an old woman, Umeno Matshueshi, lives alone. Sokurov's camera creates a poetical image out of trivial details, out of the refined simplicity of Japanese life.

Dolce: A well-known Japanese writer, Toshio Shimao, who died in 1986, his widow and their daughter. The documentary form serves as a framework to underline this film's deep insight into the biographical narration. There is but one way to touch that world, to feel its exquisite flavour and its perverse pain, - to do it as in a lyrical music piece, tenderly, dolce.

2. Elegy of the Land

Feature

Factory sealed DVD

Description

ELEGY OF THE LAND contains two shorts by Alexander Sokurov about the significance of the land to Russia, where it has an almost spiritual meaning. Both films are embued with the directors signature moody melancholy. "Maria," made in memory of Russian peasant Maria Semionovna Voinova, serves as not only a requiem for a hard-working woman but also for a way of life. Maria grew flax, and after her death, her secrets and methods of working in the fields were lost. "The Last Day of a Rainy Summer" was shot in 1978 on a Russian collective farm called a kolkhoze, which was responsible for supplying agricultural products for other parts of the country. "Last Day" captures the daily routines of this farming community, a lifestyle fading even as it was being chronicled.

Description

Over the course of a three-decade, more than eighty film career, master cineaste Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff) would return again and again to one abiding theme: the plight of women in male-dominated Japanese society. In these four lacerating works of socially conscious melodrama two prewar (Osaka Elegy, Sisters of the Gion), two postwar (Women of the Night, Street of Shame) Mizoguchi introduces an array of compelling female protagonists, crushed or resilient, who are economically and spiritually deprived by their nation's customs and traditions. With Mizoguchi's visual daring and eloquence, these films are as cinematically thrilling as they are politically rousing.

15. Elegy

Description

ELEGY is a visual poem in tribute to those who have served, especially to those who have given their lives to keep us free.

The sheer enormity and uniformity of the tombstones say it all, as if they are standing in military formation for all time. There is transcendent awe and stillness in the light and the mist, like a blanket protecting the rows of graves.

Photographed at Los Angeles National Cemetery, this 10-minute short is not a political statement - nor reflection on war - but a somber reverie, honoring the selflessness, bravery, and sacrifice of the men and women in our military.

We are reminded that freedom is not free, and there is dignity in serving a higher ideal.

The Elegy Trilogy, the Landscape Trilogy, Notes on Gestures and Black Salt Water Elegy, working as a key of an architecture of striking visions. Eight experimental films locating the cinematic works of Solomon Nagler in the higher polar and granular realms of a mystic and holistic cinema. Black Salt Water Elegy, Notes on Gesture, Fugue Nefesh, The Sex of Self-Hatred, Perhaps/We, Untitled3 (stone killer), Untitled1 (prayerielandescape), Untitled2 (the last jew of edenbridge). Allegorical by design, Nagler's vision is composed of fragments of recognizable reality commingled with the raw matter of hallucination and nascent form. In Nagler's work, vision is both a phenomenological and historical entity; a damaged engagement with time, space, and the archaeologies of memory and film. Stories of migration and refuge take suggestive shape, often against and within the vast expanses of the Canadian prairies. In Nagler's cinema, ethical engagement has to be equal to the task of the precariousness of life in transition. Home is temporary; home is a refuge. ...Cinema of Ruins: Films by Solomon Nagler ( Black Salt Water Elegy / Notes on Gesture / Fugue Nefesh / The Sex of Self-Hatred / Perhaps/We / Untitled3 (stone killer) / Untitled1 (prayerielandescape) /
