2. Intolerance (1916)

Feature

Factory sealed DVD

Description

Four separate stories are interwoven: the fall of Babylon, the death of Christ, the massacre of the Huguenots, and a contemporary drama, all crosscut and building with enormous energy to a thrilling chase and finale. Through the juxtaposition of these well known sagas, Griffith joyously makes clear his markedly deterministic view of history, namely that the suffering of the innocents makes possible the salvation of the current generation, symbolized by the boy in the modern love story.

3. Mill On The Floss, The

Description

Maggie Tulliver's love for Philip Wakem can never come to fruition. The bitter feud between their fathers has tainted the next generation. Maggie's brother Tom holds the Wakems responsible for their father's death, and lives to visit revenge upon the family he hates. He forbids Maggie to see the man she loves, and the frustrated girl is forced down a twisted path, that ultimately, will lead to tragedy.

George Eliot's classic novel is brought to life in this lavish 1937 British production which is highlighted by a seething young James Mason as Tom Tulliver and features beautiful Geraldine Fitzgerald as his sister Maggie. Geraldine Fitzgerald would be nominated for an Oscar two years later for her performance in Wuthering Heights (1939), followed by other noteworthy roles in Dark Victory (1939) and Watch On The Rhine (1943). Late in her career she would gain renown for outstanding supporting performances in The Pawnbroker (1964), Rachel, Rachel (1968) and the hit comedy Arthur (1981).

4. Intolerancia

Description

Surviving the Forgotten Armenian Genocide A moving personal story

A gripping eye witness account of the genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish government against its Armenian subjects during World War 1. Smpat Chorbadjian tells his story of the appalling hardships he suffered. It reveals his courage, endurance and will to survive, also recording his healing and restoration, after years of misery. This book makes a compelling narrative as it sheds light on the frequently forgotten experience of Turkeys Christians, against a background of global conflict.

Description

Amazing portrait of Mildred Harris Chaplin, nee Mildred Harris. Harris was born in Cheyenne Wyoming. She began her career in film in 1911 when she appeared in a western short, THE POST TELEGRAPHER, directed by Francis Ford and Thomas Ince. In the decade of the teens she appeared as a child performer in numerous films, and she was signed by the Oz Film Manufacturing Company to portray various characters in the early Oz movies. Mildred Harris transitioned to adult roles in the 1920s, but not before playing a 15 year old harem girl in D.W. Griffith's INTOLERANCE: LOVE'S STRUGGLE THROUGH THE AGES (1916.) Mildred Harris met Charles Chaplin in 1918, and, after believing that she had become pregnant by him, the couple married in October of 1918. The pregnancy was found to be a false alarm, but the the Chaplins did have a child in July of 1919. The child died three days after birth and by late 1919 the Chaplins had separated. The famous couple were divorced in 1920. Mildred Harris continued to have a career in film and in her lifetime she participated in over 100 different films. She was befriended by Cecil B. DeMille and even appeared in REAP THE WILD WIND, which starred, oddly, another woman who married Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard. This three sheet was restored and linen backed. Absolutely authentic. MovieArt Austin will sell no reproductions
