Maggie Tulliver's love for Philip Wakem can never come to fruition. The bitter feud between their fathers has tainted the next generation. Maggie's brother Tom holds the Wakems responsible for their father's death, and lives to visit revenge upon the family he hates. He forbids Maggie to see the man she loves, and the frustrated girl is forced down a twisted path, that ultimately, will lead to tragedy.

George Eliot's classic novel is brought to life in this lavish 1937 British production which is highlighted by a seething young James Mason as Tom Tulliver and features beautiful Geraldine Fitzgerald as his sister Maggie. Geraldine Fitzgerald would be nominated for an Oscar two years later for her performance in Wuthering Heights (1939), followed by other noteworthy roles in Dark Victory (1939) and Watch On The Rhine (1943). Late in her career she would gain renown for outstanding supporting performances in The Pawnbroker (1964), Rachel, Rachel (1968) and the hit comedy Arthur (1981).
