: Bayou Pink Beauty is one of several blush pink crinum. This one is especially nice and offsets rapidly. It is similar in appearance to Summer Nocturen but does not grow as tall, making an excellent, compact plant for front borders or pot culture. It can also be grown in water or ponds as long as the bulb is not covered by more than 3 of water. It is fragrant and mature bulbs can form as many as a dozen offsets in one year. forms several offsets each year. The foliage is upright, fountainesque, and typically has 6 flowers on 18 tall scapes. Bulbs grow to about 2 1/2 in diameter when mature. BACKGROUND:This bulb originally came from the Mercer Arboretum and the parentage is unknown.
GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a tender, but easy to grow bulb that should do well along the Gulf Coast. It tolerates a wide range of soils but needs warmer temperatures (probably OK down into the high teens), at least to zone 8 (planted deeper and mulched). Zone 9 or above should require no special care. Blooms come in mid-summer and continue, on and off, into the fall. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, and they will also make excellent container plants. Country of origin: USA The Crinum asiaticum Lily grows big. Mature size can reach 6 to 8 feet in height with an equal or larger spread, so it makes wonderful focal points, anchors, or background planting. It has big strap like leaves that are 3 feet or more in length that unfurl from a large bulb that can easily weigh more than 20 lbs.
In the tropics it blooms nearly year round. Fragrant flowers appear at the ends of long separate stalks, and emerge as clusters of long tubes that open out into narrow elongated petals that curl backwards. Equally long stamens and pistils arch gracefully from the centers. It is showy and has an impressive look that I can only describe as wonderful tropical presence. The fragrance is light and clean and is strongest in the early morning and evening.
These impressive large lilies are native to tropical southeastern Asia. Their impressive size, quick maturity, and versatility have made them a landscape favorite through out warmer parts of the United States.

J. C. Harvey has up to 18, light-pink, trumpet-shaped blooms on thick, 40" tall scapes. Flowers are long lasting and open several at a time for a period of about 10 days. Multiple scapes will emerge from larger bulbs, extending the blooming period. Leaves are wavy, look like a corn plant, and can grow to 6' long. They differ from Ellen Bosanquet only in the fact that they are slightly more ribbed and the bottom of the leaf (keel) has a light green stripe up the length of the back of the leaf, a trait that they inherit from one of the parents, crinum zeylanicum. Not many other crinum have this distinctive trait. Mature bulbs are HUGE and can reach 6-7" in diameter and produce many offsets each year. Bulbs are semi-fertile (pollen) but do not produce seeds (ovary/seed sterile). They form tall, stately clumps in just several years. This is one of our favorite crinum, and we grow over 1000 varieties, including about 350 of our own hybrids, because of the mid-summer blooming season (June-August), and the flowers which tower over almost everything else with their beautiful shade of light pink. This is an essential plant that will be easy and fun to grow, giving you something to trade or share with your friends. : We did the first commercial offering of Infusion, a new hybrid cross done by Alani Davis in about 2002. It is a unique hot pink ( red - one of the darkest you will find). On occasion, it can have random, white stripes in the flowers. This type of streaking happens on occasion in other different red crinum and makes this even more interesting. Mr. Davis has given us permission to offer a limited supply of his creation. Our largest bulb, is about 5 in diameter after growing it since about 2005. In the first 8 years it has produced approximately 70 new offset bulbs. We have recorded as many as 14 buds on a 40 scape, but the hybridizer reports scapes of 5' 6 tall. This plant is more compact than its parents, Ellen Bosanquet and J C Harvey, and will make a wonderful addition to anyone's crinum collection. These bulbs grow extremely fast reaching blooming size in less than 3 years and is a June-August bloomer. We grow over 1000 different crinum including about 350 of our own hybrids. This is one of the more choice, red crinum on the market and it is still very rare. BACKGROUND: A new hybrid cross of Ellen Bosanquet x J C Harvey done by Alani Davis. This and Antares, which we also grow and have for sale, is one of two seedlings he obtained from the cross. There is a possibility that this is semi-fertile, at least its pollen. Super Ellen (Bosanquet) is another crinum wonder bulb and the second tallest bulb we have in our large collection! It is one of 4 absolutely superb sister seedlings (all different seeds from the same cross). It is the tallest of the four. The bulbs can grow to over 8" in diameter, almost the size as an official soccer ball, if you can imagine that! The flowers are a dark "red", much darker than most crinum such as Ellen Bosanquet. The flowers are also huge, about 6" in diameter. Super Ellen has a strong scape and high bloom count. Sunbonnet (see our listing) is a bit darker but not quite as tall. It will not start forming offsets until it is about 5 years old, and over the next few years it can produce high numbers of new offset bulbs. This is a true horticultural marvel and anyone that likes beautiful flowers would be happy to have it in their collection We have observed as many as 28 flowers on 72" tall scapes. The leaves will grow to over 7' long and mature bulbs will reach about 9" in diameter weighing over 20 pounds. Scabrum 'Starburst' (our name) is a species bulb that forms seeds and different clones/variations are commonly found growing in old gardens. We grow about 15 different clones. Starburst has been a bit of a puzzle for us. Although it looks like a scabrum, it has a much longer blooming period. It is also our tallest scabrum and one of the best seed producers. Our best guess is that it is some type of scabrum hybrid that was back-crossed to another scabrum. The flowers are white with bright red stripes and measure about 4" in diameter. The color and shape are great and it offsets well (forms new bulbs). We have observed as many as 8 buds on 30" tall scapes. Mature bulbs reach about 5" in diameter. Every crinum collection should have at least one variety of scabrum. This and 'Fireworks' (see other listing) are our favorite scabrum. : This beautiful bulb has a dark rose-pink flower with a white throat. It is fragrant and offsets slower than Ellen Bosanquet. The leaves are darker and less coarse and pointed and arch more gracefully. It is much more stately in form than Ellen. It blooms in May and continues all summer, where Ellen blooms for about a month. Scapes can grow 4+ feet with up to 20 flowers. Its foliage is more like C. powellii. It will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. It is one of the taller of the over 1000 crinum that we grow. BACKGROUND: An improved form of Ellen Bosanquet. 9. Crinum Lily, Cecil Houdyshel, small-size bulb

: Cecil Houdyshel is an old favorite and choice hybrid that is not very common, but highly desired since it is one of the earliest blooming crinum starting here in February or March. It has a very long blooming season lasting about six months. In addition to that, it forms an imposing clump of tall leaves with beautiful light pink flowers. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids, and this is one of the most pleasing and desirable. Most powellii type clones have pink blooms like this one and some are very light pink or even pure white. This has one of the better shaped flowers. Some scapes on this bulb have been 48 tall with as many as 20 buds. It stays almost constantly in bloom and mature bulbs can produce 8 or more scapes in one season. These bulbs can get absolutely huge measuring over 6 in diameter and weighing 5 pounds or more. BACKGROUND: Cecil Houdyshel is a cross of two species, C. moorei and C. bulbispermum and is is named after its hybridizer. This was one of the first breakthrough powellii type crosses with large bulbs being extremely vigorous. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: Flowers appear as early as Febuary and bloom at least through June (and can bloom into the Fall) here in zone 9. This is a very hardy, prolific and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil), extended dry periods, and will tolerate freezing weather to zone 7 if the bulb is planted deeply and mulched in the winter.
