Slade Vandal hates bullies. I mean hates them. Violent spouses, blackmailers, abusers, gangbangers. He despises them all. I guess that's what having a psychopathic abusive father and an indifferent mother does to a person. Slade, now thirty-five, wants to relieve Los Angeles of these bullies and evildoers. He thought about buying a machine gun and going ape - you know, Falling Down and Death Wish stuff. But then he had a better idea: Use electroshock therapy to alter the abusers' minds until they're docile, and then release them back into society. And guess what? It works. Slade's secret email address, passed on to those in need by former client-victims, receives new mail almost daily. Victims identify their abusers and beg Slade to take their agony away. For years, his client-victims send only gratitude. Then, a recent client, thirteen-year-old D.G. explains that, while his bully no longer tortures him and makes his life a living hell, he, D.G., has begun hurting himself. Emotionally traumatized, depressed, and unable to cope, D.G. has taken to cutting, self-defeatism, and starving himself. Slade's electroshock therapy zombifies abusers' minds until they lose their aggressive nature. But what about when the victim turns on himself? Now Slade must invent a humane treatment that breaks the cycle without damaging D.G.'s mind. He learns he can relieve both self-abusers and abusers without harming either's quality of life. If Slade can avoid the twisted schemes of a private investigator, a man who's connected Slade to a recent abduction, Slade can save D.G., himself, and the lives of future clients. Enter the world of evolution. Life only begins when you conquer the darkest layer of human nature. Amy Langevin is the author of two short horror stories.
