Description

George, an Atlanta auto mechanic and self-appointed "Soldier of Christ," has embarked on a tortured quest to investigate lifestyles he regards as rejected by God. On the street, in clubs, and in private homes, his interviews with gay men and Lesbians reveal their struggles to accept and love themselves. They also begin to illuminate for George his struggles with his own history and demons. As he delves into the peoples' pasts, his defenses against childhood memories begin to erode. His haunted curiosity leads him, through increasingly tense and urgent confrontations, to inquire about all aspects of their lives together, even to witnessing homosexual lovemaking. Most threatening of all, however, is the loving and mutually supportive relationships these people have forged. Increasingly embittered and outraged, George observes that the lives of his subjects are more fulfilling than his own. As his personality structure deteriorates, so do his personal relationships, even as his history of child abuse begins to emerge into consciousness. Confrontation with an old lover, a woman he lived with for years, underscores his lack of understanding of the nature of love and intimacy, while his frustrated pursuit of a young female coworker dramatizes his confusion of sex and intimacy. This drama of disintegration progresses through George's attempt to find companionship through a prostitute and concludes with his shattering understanding that he has rejected himself.
