Before discussing the present young adult novel, Sounder, it is essential to know a little about the author, William H. Armstrong. He was born on 14th of September, 1914, in Lexington, Virginia. Armstrong was brought up in a farm in Shenandoah Valley. Most of his schooling and education took place at Sunday school and the local church. That education played a vital role in transforming the boy Armstrong into a man. The present novel Sounder also tells the story of a boy growing up and transforming into a man in almost similar manner.
