Description

Hot Water and Steam Heating with Gas, Oil and Solid Fuels is a digital version of my book, Residential Hot Water and Steam Heating: Gas, Oil and Solid Fuels, originally published by Prentice-Hall in 1987. While selected sections of this text have been revised, it remains essentially unchanged from the original printed version, focusing primarily on the design and logic of residential heating systems. The information contained in this text is both broad in scope and comprehensive in nature. Its features include an introduction to hot water and steam heating systems including piping layouts; sizing techniques for heating systems based on simple heat-loss calculations that produce quick, accurate results; an examination of a variety of system peripheral components and accessories used in most hydronic, steam, and solid-fuel installations; gas heating system fundamentals covering standard atmospheric combustion, induced draft and electronic ignition systems; oil heating technology and the operation of modern, flame-retention burners; the design and installation of a variety of add-on solid fuel and multi-fuel boilers; steam heating system layout, design, operation and maintenance; and upgrading options for improving the operation of existing heating systems. Finally, it should be noted that much of the information within this text was originally gathered and researched in the middle 1980s. While the theory of operation and conceptual fundamentals of heating system design remain fundamentally unchanged throughout this time period, the reader is advised to research current options available in both the selection of specific appliances and their control systems.
