A marvelous, large perennial native to South Africa's Cape Province, where it grows in wet places between sea level and 1200 m.It produces clusters of leathery, broad, straplike evergreen leaves and tall, erect flower spikes to 2.5 m high with many, bright yellow flowers.
It makes a great ornamental for warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 9 and above. The rootstock has a red sap that is used as a dye.
