During World War II Damien Parer became Australia's best-known war photographer, his many cinema documentaries of the war (for Cinesound News) eventually winning Australia's first 'Oscar'. He was on more front lines and probably saw more close-up action than any serving soldier. He became immensely popular, not only with the cinema public but with the serving soldiers and airmen: his unique personality endeared him to great numbers of serving troops.
