Botanical Name: Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri' Asparagus Fern is not a true fern, but a member of the lily family (Liliaceae). Long, arching stems densely covered with short, needle-like leaflets give this plant a delicate appearance. It has a cascading habit that makes it ideal for a hanging basket. Mature plants will bloom in summer with small, white-to-pale pink flowers, sometimes followed by clusters of green berries that turn red in the winter. Florists love the feathery, emerald-green foliage in bouquets. It's also a popular outdoor container plant in temperate climates.

Excellent House Plant

Description

FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores). This great little fern does well in a wide range of conditions but best of all is that it is compact in size and is one of the few ferns that fairs well with neglect and does extremely well in wet habitats. It stays under 12" tall and sends creeping runners which sprout new plantlets. When it is actively growing it has a very subtle, but clear lemon scent. It is an excellent house plant!

USDA Zones: 8 - 10
Height: 24 inch perennial
Bloom Color: White and pale pink
Sowing Rate: 3 - 4 seeds per plant

Description

Asparagus Fern flower is a slightly woody evergreen plant with upright or trailing branches. The flower seed is easy to grow and drought-tolerant. This fernlike perennial develops into a fast-growing, sprawling groundcover, or a nice-sized houseplant that requires minimal care. Grows 24 inches and 2 - 3 ft. wide in full to part sun - some shade maintains a deeper green color - and moist but well-drained soil. Asparagus Fern has feathery foliage on arching stems that looks especially good in hanging baskets and gives it a soft or fluffy look from a distance, and the bright red berries that follow the inconspicuous, fragrant white or pale pink flowers add interest throughout the year. Flowering lasts for roughly two weeks during the summer. Birds are highly attracted to the fruit and aid in the dispersal of the flower seed.
