Fall planting is best. Elephant garlic produce a very hardy, 36" tall, plant with large gray-green leaves and a flower stalk that can be up to 5 foot high. Its scape, a large globe-type pink/purple flower appear in late spring. The bulbs, weigh an average of four to five ounces each and can grow to sixteen ounces, form under the soil, reaching 3 to 4 inches in diameter and consisting of 4 to 6 large cloves, surrounded by small bulbils (corms, seeds). Plants grown from bulbils form one, symmetrical clove known as a round, rather than a bulb. Plants grown from rounds or from cloves, produce a large bulb with several cloves and a flower stalk.
