Description: 2 Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) multi-clove bulbs weighing between 2.5 and 4 ounces each, approximately 6 ounces total weight, ideal for eating or for fall planting. Kentucky's Best fresh Elephant Garlic bulbs are raised all naturally, pesticide-free and are non-GMO. Elephant Garlic is closely related to a leek, not a true garlic, the bulbs have a milder, sweeter flavor than garlic. EAT: Elephant garlic, has a mild, sweet flavor, that is somewhere between garlic and onion. Cloves are large, easy to peel and can be eaten raw, sliced into salads; sauted, steamed or boiled as a vegetable; makes a great hummus or pesto; or cooked like onions in a soup or baked in the oven and roasted on the grill. Rounds are great for roasting vegetable kabobs on the grill! Young leaves can be sliced and added to salads or used as a garnish. Scapes (pre-open flower and stems) are yummy in scrambled eggs! High in vitamins A, C and E. Low calorie. PLANT: 6-8 inches apart with point of bulbs up about 2 inches below the soil surface in full sun and rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Fall planting is best. Elephant garlic produce a very hardy, 36" tall, plant with large gray-green leaves and a flower stalk that can be up to 5 foot high. Its scape, a large globe-type pink/purple flower appear in late spring. The bulbs, weigh an average of four to five ounces each and can grow to sixteen ounces, form under the soil, reaching 3 to 4 inches in diameter and consisting of 4 to 6 large cloves, surrounded by small bulbils (corms, seeds). Plants grown from bulbils form one, symmetrical clove known as a round, rather than a bulb. Plants grown from rounds or from cloves, produce a large bulb with several cloves and a flower stalk. Elephant garlic does best in rich, deeply cultivated, well-drained soil and full sun.
