The Giant Is Awakened by Horace Tapscott has long been considered an underground classic. Probably conisdered 'underground' because until now it has been largely unavailable until this International Phonograph, Inc. reissue on CD. As with their previous reissues, IPG has meticulously and brilliantly restored the original audio and enclosed it in a stunning mini-jacket reproduction of the original vinyl cover. The music evinces the raw power and unbridled creativity of these Los Angeles musicians back in 1969, immersed in community activism and clearly bucking commercialism and all that it stood for. Yet, despite its unbridled, avant creativity, the music is structured and solid, creating a musically magnetic push and pull.
